Falcons Beat Wolves For Second Straight Win

SEATTLE – (OCT 20)  Jessica Bettencourt had the final kill of the match for the second straight game as Seattle Pacific University defeated Western Oregon University in a three game sweep Saturday night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (6-6, 11-9) disposed of the Wolves (10-3, 13-7) handily over three games by scores of 30-19, 30-18, and 30-22.

SPU held their opponent to a dismal .133 clip while hitting at a .341 percentage of their own. The greatest damage for WOU came in game number two, when SPU out hit the Wolves by a .222 margin.

Seniors Alyssa Given and Rachel Biornstad led the charge for the Falcons, both hitting for a match high 14 kills. Given added 16 digs on a .394 clip, and Biornstad two aces on a .500 percentage.

Nikki Finley had 12 kills, while teammate Angie Wodrich was close behind with 11 and nine digs. Torii Mount led all players with three service aces, and matched Given with 16 digs as well.

Kayla Mainer led the Wolves with ten kills and adding 11 digs, with teammate Stacey Bennett close behind at nine. Mainer and Claire Carpenter tied for team high digs at 11.

The two teams stayed even for roughly the first twelve points of each game, after which SPU took over, opening up seven plus point leads at several points in the match. The Falcons out blocked WOU as well by a ratio of three to one over the match.

WOU came into the match a game behind Western Washington University for the GNAC lead, after being swept by NNU Thursday evening in Nampa, Id. The Wolves had not lost back-to-back matches since August 31, and have a combined 15-1 game record against the Falcons in Brougham Pavilion over the past five years. SPU has not lost to WOU in Seattle since 2002.

SPU now ventures north to face GNAC foes Alaska Fairbanks and Alaska Anchorage on Thursday and Saturday of next week.
